CHEERS!

Here's a happy little piece of work that totally made MY morning.

Some good news in the barrage of daily very bad things we encounter in our attempts to be and remain educated and informed citizens is a rare delight.

This cheered me right up. It's the business I'd love to go into when I grow up.

  1. My father's cousin Tom made moonshine, or "white liquor," as we call it around here.

He made it in a still that looked like a miniature steam locomotive that sat in the front yard of the log cabin he built himself in the Applachian Mountains of North Carolina.

At a family reunion up there in 1995, it was my great pleasure to sip a small glass of his stuff neat. Some of my younger relatives were mixing it with lemon-lime soda in Big Gulp cups.

And now, just to muck with your stereotypes, I'll add that Tom was a retired managing editor of Fortune magazine.

  2. Sorry; that last line should have read, "TO Tom."
