Ex-Bunnypants aide John DeIulio is furiously backpedaling, trying to distance himself from the comments he made in the Esquire interview and elsewhere*. Hell, with all the pirouetting he's been doing you'd think he was a Democrat.

BuzzFlash writes "...We bet that the White House threatened to cut off federal funds for the University of Pennsylvania, where DeIulio is a professor, if he didn't issue a damage control statement...It was the University, after all, that inexplicably issued an apology on behalf of DeIulio. The WH staff, senior and junior, "consistently talked and acted as if the height of political sophistication consisted in reducing every issue to its simplest, black-and-white terms for public consumption, then steering legislative initiatives or policy proposals as far right as possible."

*Paul Begala, on Crossfire last night: Let's look at what John Dilulio himself wrote in The Weekly Standard two weeks ago. Let me read to you from Dilulio:

"The administration's domestic policy record is almost non-existent. Not counting policymaking through speech-making in related communications adventures, no White House in recent memory has focused so little staff energy on thinking through and proposing meaningful social welfare initiatives. As a result, the Bush 'compassion agenda' in all but rhetorical terms has virtually disappeared."

The same thing he wrote to Esquire, which Ron Suskind used, he wrote weeks earlier in The Weekly Standard.



So why is this a big deal? Well, let's face it, politically there hasn't been much to laugh about here at WTF, so anything that may be causing Karl Rove to bitch-slap himself while sitting in gastrointestinal distress on the john - pardon the pun - is cause for much and . Yeah, we really are that petty!
