Well, not really, but that's about as plausible as the DOJ's explanation that the provision in the reauthorized Patriot Act that allows the President to circumvent Senate confirmation of US Attorney nominees was contributed "by a mid-level department lawyer without the knowledge of his superiors or anyone at the White House."
Actually, according to earlier reports, the provision was added by Sen. Arlen Specter, in an all-Republican conference committee, "at the request of the Justice Department." At the request of a mid-level department lawyer? Somehow I doubt this.
We're out here, asshats, we're paying attention, and we remember what you said before. The next round of excuses should be interesting.
