Bogus letter sent to LA Latinos to warn them off voting

The AP is reporting that some asshat wrote to people with Latino names in the Orange County area (originally in Spanish):

You are advised that if your residence in this country is illegal or you are an immigrant, voting in a federal election is a crime that could result in jail time.

Of course naturalized citizens can register to vote, so this purely a scare tactic and an attempt to disenfranchise legal voters.

State authorities are investigating the source of the letter. Its format and content seem to point to a locally-based group, the California Coalition for Immigration Reform, but they deny having sent it.

Since the targeted group is likely to vote Democratic, I also smell a pasty, blob-faced, Rovian rat.
