We had a magnolia tree in the yard when I was a kid. I loved that climbing that tree. I remember breaking a few of these thingies off and pretending they were hand grenades. I'd pull off a seed to "detonate" it before lobbing it. Parents eventually cut it down because they got tired of the "mess" they made when the flowers and leaves fell off. :(
