GREAT MOMENTS IN HISTORY
1971: Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour debuted.
1981: MTV debuted .
1994: NASDAQ trading is halted for 34 minutes after a squirrel gnaws power lines at the organization's computer center in Trumbull, CT.
On this day: Lammas, the old Saxon Feast of Bread of Hlaf Mass, was one of the four great pagan festivals of Britain. It is a celebration of the cutting of the first corn harvest and the baking of the first bread from the new year's crop. It is also Lughnassadh, named after Lugh, the Celtic god of wisdom and illumination, the Celtic equivalent of some aspect of Odin. It used to be the day for giving money to the servants. A great Lammas Fair is still held at Ballycastle in Ireland and Yellowman, a sort of toffee, is eaten in large quantities.
