Today in History
1872: the American brigantine Mary Celeste was found abandoned; the crew of 14 had comletely vanished and were never seen again.
1945: the celebrated disappearance of Flight 19 took place in what was dubbed (20 years later by Vincent Gaddis) 'the Bermuda Triangle'. Five TBM Avenger Torpedo bombers stationed at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, vanished in perfect flying weather. So did the giant Martin Mariner PBM flying boat which went out to investigate. Three hundred planes searching the area found no evidence of any of them.
