Summer in NJ has finally arrived: hot, humid, air you can practically cut with a knife. We've had one thunderstorm after another rolling through since Saturday. Yesterday evening the power was knocked out - ironically, during a rerun of "Twister" - finally coming back on at two this morning. Fun fact: our neighbor's obnoxious generator ran out of gas at 10 PM. Heh heh heh.

Powell to leave, to "spend more time with his family"
Secretary of State Colin Powell and his deputy, Richard Armitage, are intending to step down even if court-appointed bungler Snippy the Chimp manages to steal another election.

Armitage recently told useless national security adviser Condoliar Rice that he and Powell will leave on Jan. 21, 2005, the day after the next presidential inauguration, sources said. Powell has indicated that a commitment made to his wife, rather than any dismay at the administration's foreign policy, is a key factor in his desire to limit his tenure to one presidential term.

Rice and Deputy Defense Secretary/neocon warmonger and liar Paul Wolfowitz are the leading candidates to replace Powell, according to sources inside and outside the misadministration. - the Washingtoon comPost. Great.

Bush Cartel silences Niger leaders in Iraq nuclear row
The Bush misadministration has warned the Niger government to keep quiet over claims that Saddam Hussein sought to buy uranium for his nuclear weapons program from them.

Herman Cohen, a former assistant secretary of state for Africa, called on Niger's president last week to relay the message from Washington, according to senior Niger government officials.

Mob intimidation

One said: "Let's say Mr Cohen put a friendly arm around the president to say sorry about the forged documents, but then squeezed his shoulder hard enough to convey the message, 'Let's hear no more about this affair from your government'. Basically he was telling Niger to shut up."

American officials denied that there had been any attempt to "gag" the Niger government. The official, however, said that there was "a clear attempt to stop any more embarrassing stories coming out of Niger".

He said that Washington's warning was likely to be heeded. "Mr Cohen did not spell it out but everybody in Niger knows what the consequences of upsetting America or Britain would be. We are the world's second-poorest country and we depend on international aid to survive." - from the UK Telegraph.
