U! F Off!
OCEAN CITY, NJ - Visitors to the boardwalk Thurday night reported seeing bright lights that moved in tandem hundreds of yards off the beach and then mysteriously blinked out only to reappear simultaneously.

"I thought at first maybe it was fireworks," said John Loftus, copy editor at a Bucks County newspaper who is on vacation this week.

He was among the crowd that stopped in its tracks to watch the lights from the Seventh Street Boardwalk.

"At first it was a very bright orange light. It was moving in a pattern, turning its lights on and off," he said. "I just thought, 'What are we watching?'"

Some people thought the lights were boat flares and, thinking a ship was in distress, contacted the U.S. Coast Guard.

It was no close encounter but a military operation offshore, the Coast Guard said. That's all the agency would say.

"The abnormal lights reported yesterday - it was a military operation," Lt. Rodney Rios said. "What the drill was, we're not privy to."
