Senate passes bill to stop junk e-mail
Finally, they all do something right.

The Senate passed - by 97-0 - a wide-ranging bill Wednesday to stamp out spam.

The bill makes some spamming a crime with up to five-year jail terms and bans companies from sending repeat e-mails to people who do not want to be contacted. It also calls for creation of a national "do-not-e-mail" list similar to the "do-not-call" registry that is already stopping unwanted telemarketers.

The bill stops short of mandating the registry, instead directing the FTC to develop a registry system within six months and to document technical hurdles.
