US deaths surge in Iraq

US military casualties have surged in Iraq in recent weeks, with troops engaging in perilous urban sweeps to curb sectarian violence in Baghdad while facing unrelenting violence elsewhere.

At least 44 US troops have been killed so far in October. At the current pace, the month would be the deadliest for US forces since January 2005.
In other punctuation news, 25 Iraqi police officers are "lost" each day to death or permanent injury, says a US security advisor.

14 more tortured bodies have been found in and around Baghdad.
