Sneaky part of Patriot Act removed Senate oversight of US Attorney appointments

And the Misadministration didn't waste any time exploiting the change.

Since this provision was added by a Republicans-only committee after the House and Senate had voted on previous versions, asking "why didn't they read it before passing it?" is pretty pointless.

The current wording of the law doesn't even appear in the most current version of the U.S. code (search with "546" to find the relevant section), so you'd have to read the final version of the Patriot Act reauthorization to know about it. Nor are the deleted subsections quoted there, but referred to simply as (c) and (d).

Those sumbitches.

On a cheery note, the Judicary Committee plans to poke Alberto Gonzales' ass with a cattle prod ask Attorney General Gonzales all about it today.
