Sigh -- mutant cardinal is more likely.

That's a female red cardinal. It's just the male that has the day-glo coloring. Mom has to stay inconspicuous when she's on the nest.

I'm always amazed how so many of those little birds can survive these frigid conditions(ie; -10ºto -20ºF nights, with the occasional 10-20 mph winds). I know that their feathers are good insulators, but it STILL seems hard to believe they can do it...

Yeah, I saw a bunch of those last year in Central Texas. The other birds were starting to fly south in bunches, but these birds just kept on keepin' on.

Amazing amount of starlings there in CenTex, by the tens of thousands, everywhere in November and December.

too bad she doesn't realize that our gazing at her beauty in nature replenishes our Bushco depleted Spirit lights, and how she makes the world a better place just by being. What a precious and splendid thing she is.
