Bush still strongly supporting lying incompetent crony
No, the other one.

Spaceman Spliff yesterday stood by his embattled BFF, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, defying the broad bipartisan consensus emerging in Washington that Gonzales has so badly damaged his own credibility that he should resign.

Bush expressed "full confidence" in Gonzales and praised his "fantastic" service. But a wide array of Republicans described Gonzales with phrases such as "dead man walking," "clueless moron," and "fucking zombie with his head up his ass."

"Everybody at the White House all think he needs to go, but the president doesn't," said a Republican who consulted the Bush team yesterday. Another White House ally said Bush and Gonzales are ignoring reality: "They're the only two people on the planet Earth who don't see it."

I try to understand why this administration seems to hang on to these assholes (ie; Rumsfeld, Bolton, Ashcroft, etc) so long. Even in a pragmatic, political sense it doesn't seem especially logical. The only possible reasons I can come up with are:
1.) Because they don't really like or appreciate government (ie; all that 'less government is best' type of crapola), there's NOT a big pool of people to choose from, (most of their buddies are already making gobs of money in the private sector) so they want to avoid displaying that shortage by going through the selection/confirmation process.
2.) In combination with #1),they can continue to play the 'persecuted martyr' role... "Oh those horrible Demon-crats are picking on us mercilessly!" which will sucker in a few of the most unaware voters, and keep the SCLM off-balance.
3.) It appeals to their hard-right/fundamentalist followers, who meld blind, simplistic obstinancy into a kind of 'spiritual courage'.
4.) Because, for the most part, these assholes ARE performing the way Bush, Cheney, et al WANT them to perform! They're starting the wars, reducing Congressional oversight/power, promulgating the right-wing agenda. "Where's the problem?"

Your attaching the nickname "Spaceman Spliff" to Bush 43 is an insult to Calvins and Hobbeses everywhere.
