Cool: the Perseid meteor shower is this weekend!

Mark Sunday, August 12th on the calendar. Look towards the east about 9 pm (your local time, wherever you might be). You will almost certainly see lots of meteors -- this is one of the best shows of the year.
The Perseids are fantastic. A few years ago when we were lucky enough to have clear skies they looked like tiny fireworks. It was awesome.

What I found really interesting to read a few years ago was that almost all these meteors are initially no bigger than a grain of sand! Of course it's a grain of sand moving up to 50,000 mph relative to our atmosphere, and against a pretty much black background it makes the streaks we see.
