Ew Meh Ged.

Hello fellow WTFers! Tis I, JasonC. Sorry I've been absent lately, but please know I've missed you dearly--like a crack addict mother, ripped apart from her child.

So, I was just wondering... did anyone else want to rip their eyeballs out of their head as I did after reading this little nugget from Dana Perino's White House?

During today’s White House press briefing, spokeswoman Dana Perino condemned Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s declaration of “emergency rule” in Pakistan. She said that the administration is “deeply disappointed” by the measure, which suspends the country’s constitution, and believes it is never “reasonable” to “restrict constitutional freedoms in the name of fighting terrorism”:

Q: Is it ever reasonable to restrict constitutional freedoms in the name of fighting terrorism?

MS. PERINO: In our opinion, no.

If you watch the vid at TP, you can see for yourself that she even said that with a straight face. No smile at the corner of her mouth just begging to be let free. No "haha... gotcha!" thrown in for comic effect.

Meanwhile, back in a place called reality, the Petulant Boy King can be seen daily pissing and shitting himself senseless on the tattered remains of what we used to call our Constitution (hey, that 2nd ammendment still looks fairly clean!). No word from the White House if he's promised to stop doing that from now on. We'll have to wait and see (but, please, don't hold your breath)

Though I didn't see THAT account, I had to read this from the AP:
"The order drew swift complaints from the United States and Britain - Musharraf's main Western allies. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged restraint on all sides and a return to democracy. The United States ``does not support extraconstitutional measures,'' Rice said from Turkey, where she was participating in a conference with Iraq's neighbors.

To me it's not so much that fuckheads like Rice, Cheney, W, et al SAY these crazy-ass things because most intelligent/aware people don't believe them anymore, but it's the fact that the SCLM virtually NEVER puts up their previous words ("the Constitution is just a goddamn piece of paper!" by W, for instance) or actions (too numerous to list) as appropriate counterpoint/commentary!?! It's just stripped of any context and presented alone! Reminiscent of OJ's lawyers claiming because 'the glove does not fit you must acquit' -- forget all the physical blood evidence, knife evidence, glove-purchase evidence, etc - - just focus on a faulty test (OJ wore plastic gloves during the test, among other reasons.) It's a nice deception, if you've got a gullible jury or a compliant press corps, but in neither case is justice served.

big em is entirely correct. Once you know their little game it's not hard to catch them on it. MSM presents these little nuggets without any context or questions all the time and it's aimed straight at the unwary.
"Rice seeks peace"
"US strives for reconciliation"
"Bush looks for compromise"
"We don't torture"
It creates an unconscious subtext for a worldview that lets the filthy criminals get away with their shit.
