History Channel just had a program on about 'hillbillys', and mentioned the in the 1930's & 40's there were 5 or 6 US southern states that "passed laws against snake-handling in religious ceremonies due to a number [50 or 60 people] that DIED from the practice". To me, it says a LOT about an area when you have to pass a law to try to make the residents NOT casually handle deadly animals - - mainly it says that "they's 'teched in the 'ead".
