For those of us over 50, it's a take-off on the Jimmy Dean hit from the early 1960's...

And it's just as ridiculous.

The first 45RPM record I owned was Jimmy Dean's "Big Bad John", and I loved everything about it: the hammer-and-anvil percussion, the dark tone, the ghostly chorus, the tale of bravery.

'course, I was six years old, so I guess Cornyn has the elementary school vote wrapped up, if only the little scamps could cast one.

Meanwhile, I'm stunned that someone didn't point out to Cornyn that this song is a eulogy, whose final line is: "Down at the bottom this mine lies a big, big man."

Farewell, O politicking clown, we knew ye for what ye were.

I always liked that song 'Big Bad John' - - still do now. Yeah, it's hokey/schmaltzy, but it's kind of classic plot (corrupt person redeems himself via self-sacrifice and is memorialized by society) updated to the wild-west era (and after all, isn't "A Tale of Two Cities" plot very similar, except for the physical identity part?), and most of all, I like the bass voices and the semi-speaking Johnny Cash-esque narration, and the hook-ey music.

Obscurata: remember a parody version called "Small Sad Sam" released some months later? I gotta go Google that and see if I can find out about it...
