As somebody who worked at GM for a time, Rick Wagoner has tremendously cut the size and expenses of GM. Some of their problems were sown many years ago, with too many plants and high UAW salaries. Some of their troubles were ingrained in the bean-counting systems and how new programs got approved or non-approved.
Most of the money Wagoner got was incentive-based. I remember hearing in 2004 that getting through 2009 was going to be tough. It's the peak year for retiree pensions.
