There may be a good and practical reason that Obama'd be fine with the continued presence of the smug, traitorous douchewipe. John Scalzi explains.
Meanwhile, Rachel Maddow says dump the snivelling little shit:

What’s really going on with Joe the Lieberman

she's so awesome.
I agree with Rachel. She covered every angle. Lieberman should GO.
Lieberman will get away scot-free with NO reprimand from Obama, for the same reason that Rahm Emmanuel, a douchebag corporatist and lobbyist muppet, is now his chief of Staff.
AIPAC and Israel.
And now, back to business as usual.
Excellent compendium by Maddow! Another reason (admittedly more intangible) to get rid of Lieberman is for the Dems to show some 'vitality'. Too often the Dems are perceived (rightly or wrongly) as kind of wishy-washy, overly wonkish, prone to talk more than action. I (and many Dems, I suspect) personally believe it's 10 times better to be that way than to shoot from the hip and get things horribly wrong, like W (and Reagan before him) have so amply demonstrated. However, to at least gain a MODICUM of grudging respect (never verbalized) from right-wingers whom the Dems need to fend off, from the MSM, and from some independents whose votes are always needed, they HAVE to perform a few DYNAMIC ACTIONS of significant note once in awhile (especially in our 'reality-TV' culture). When it's obvious you have a rank traitor to your party in your ranks, it would be appropriate to bar him from the party (as Maddow rightly explains, he's probably NOT going to vote with the Dems in the future -- especially on filibuster closure -- ANYWAY so forget that from the beginning)and show that you're not a party to be double-crossed. Doing something like THAT might give you some 'credits' towards doing something peaceful in the world, like withdrawing from Iraq (which of course the Reich wingers are ALWAYS going to scream about even if it's 100 yrs in the future -- ala Japan, Germany or Korean occupations). Better to do this than to behave like you have the 'battered-wife' syndrome...
I agree with big em. The reason a lot of people go with the Reich-wingers is that they act like they are doing something to further their agenda. They seem to be moving, the fact that they are moving in the wrong direction doesn't matter, they appear to be moving. Meanwhile the Dems are standing around debating what to do. It's time the Dems grew a pair, cojones or ovaries it doesn't matter long as someone shows the other side where the bear shit in the buckwheat!!
