Sigh

"Nearly half of the Arizona Legislature wants to force President Barack Obama to show his birth certificate to state officials if he runs for re-election. All 40 co-sponsors are Republicans, comprising 75 percent of the GOP caucus. Two of them have since resigned to run for Congress."

I've often mused why the mountain/plains/desert region of this country is -- with relatively few exceptions -- politically 'conservative' (at least since the 1950's when I started becoming politically aware). I can't help thinking that it's mainly a couple of things - 1.)a cultural vestigal remnant of the early 'settlers', who had (or soon adopted) a strong sense of self-reliance, 2.) the often-present isolation, which anneals the hermetic spirit and reduces the socialization tendencies. Add in conservative rhetoric (anti-immigration, low-taxes, gun-'rights', etc) and a few places with generally perceived 'good' weather (ie; the southwest), and you will draw-in MORE of the moneyed/conservative types in disproportionate amounts. That's the best I can come up with...

Thanks jadedj - I'm just trying to get a semi-grasp on things as I go along.

Addendum: I like Arizona & especially the southwest canyonland scenery (it even makes stopping in Las Vegas tolerable!) and have visited there 7 or 8 times in my life and hope to get there again.
