Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion
Seems pretty straightforward.
When your basic party tenet- - year in and year out - - is advocating a return to the unfettered capitalism of the 50 yr period following the US Civil War (with the largest social inequities this country has ever seen, other than our treatment of the native population) and knowing that most of the people in this country wouldn't want that IF they were accurately informed about it, you have to stay very VERY busy concocting imaginary threats & scapegoats, grossly exaggerating real threats, and encouraging every non-threatening/engaging distraction that your billions of $$ can buy so that people don't start thinking straight. Mainstream religion often helps make people malleable & docile, so it's an obvious tool for 'Mayberry Machaviallis'...
