NEW YORK (AP) - Leading state Democrats have asked Independence Party candidate Thomas Golisano to drop out of the race for governor and endorse their candidate, a request Golisano responded to Saturday by scheduling a public announcement for Sunday.

A Marist College poll released a week ago of 432 likely voters showed Pataki with 47 percent, followed by McCall with 27 percent and Golisano with 17 percent. It had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

Our intention is to encourage and facilitate smaller donations to offset the influence of wealthy and corporate donors. With the Congressional balance of power hinging on the outcome of a few key races, the candidates endorsed here are crucial to maintaining the balance of power in Washington."
