Democrats won't get Justice memo
T-Dems say document could embarrass GOP.
The "Justice Department" has formally refused a demand from Texas Democrats to release a lengthy internal memo concerning the rethug redistricting plan of Texas.
The Democrats' lead attorney, J. Gerald Hebert, and other lawyers said the length of the memo provides a strong indication that career lawyers were building a case against the map, but faced opposition from higher-level Bush administration appointees. Hebert wrote in his appeal letter that "sources inside the Department of Justice" have told him that was the case.
"Clearly the Department of Justice is stonewalling this request to avoid the embarrassment that will surely ensue when the memorandum is made public," Hebert wrote in his appeal. "Unfortunately, the political appointees of the Justice Department appear committed to dismantling the Voting Rights Act. They are hiding this report, because it will make their intentions clear."

Rehnquist questioned on Cheney-Scalia trip
Two leading Democratic senators asked Chief Justice William Rehnquist on Thursday about just what the hell Fat Tony was doing canoodling with the propriety of a hunting trip Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia took with Dick 'Chicanery' Cheney while Cheney has a case pending before the high court.
In a letter to Rehnquist, Sens. Patrick Leahy and Joe Lieberman asked the chief justice to tell them what "canons, procedures and rules" are in place to determine when justices should recuse themselves from cases, and if indeed some of the justices were present at Tom 'Bugsy' DeLay's hot-tub and lapdance party.
