Hi guys, being probably one of the last people on Earth not to have a cell phone, I've been thinking about rectifying that. Seeing as though I never call anyone, I'm looking for one that has a good camera and ability to text/e-mail. There are so many choices I'm going bonkers. Does anyone have any recommendations? Anything to stay away from?

I'd first check coverage in your area. May be good to ask neighbors what service they use. That gets you into a list of phones that work on that network.
The Blackberry Curve is far and away the best phone I've ever had. It's been great for texting, email (obviously,) the camera is pretty good and it seems to do well with intertrons. I haven't heard much on the newer Storm and Bold, though. I'd stay away from the Pearl. I wasn't all that happy with the Pearl that I had.
I lurve my iPhone. And I had my beloved Blackjack pried out of my angry hands when I got it (I'm an IT manager and had to get one so I could support them for the company), so it was in no way a hoped-for item. It is really quite amazingly fun. My $.02
I have a Blackberry Pearl. It's cheaper than an iPhone (which I'm considering upgrading to because of the cool GPS abilities.) The Pearl is less of a blackberry and more of a phone. Its good for texting and checking email instantly. It also has a camera, and if you wanted to, you could download an application (called BeeJive) that allows you to IM.
Tracphone, prepaid.
I too was a cellphone luddite. After a lot of research I got a $10 Virgin Mobile at Best Buy and buy pre-paid cards with cash.
I pay 20 cents a minute but it's anonymous and if I lose it, (or drop it in the lake like my friends who paid $200 to $500 for their phones), I don't care.
The audio quality is better than my GF's Crackberry.
p.s. I always have service, unlike my friends with AT&T and Verizon.
YMMV
As long as the phone has the features you want: ie camera (and you can call people, too) I go with checking what people in your neighborhood use. I suffered through 3 contracts before I found out what worked here in the forest where I live.
