Cool
"There are only a handful of amphitheaters in all of Germany," chief architect Karl Schmotz said, noting that most were in major centers of the Roman empire such as Trier in west Germany.
It was likely the amphitheater, which was uncovered near a construction area, had been next to a Roman military barracks which housed some 500 soldiers. Experts said it was likely that the amphitheater had been used for gladiator battles as well as weapons training.
Earlier this year, researchers found the grave of a knight dated from the era 800 years before Christ near the same site.

From the 'things are goin' great!' dept
Fri October 24, 2003 10:22 AM - Two U.S. soldiers were killed in a mortar attack near the Iraqi town of Samarra on Friday, a U.S. military spokeswoman said. The spokeswoman said four soldiers were wounded in the attack, which took place just before noon around 60 miles north of the capital. - - link.
Press underreports wounded in Iraq
'Few newspapers routinely report injuries in Iraq, beyond references to specific incidents. Since the war began in March, 1,927 soldiers have been wounded in Iraq, many quite severely. (The tally is current as of Oct. 20.) Of this number, 1,590 were wounded in hostile action, and 337 from other causes. About 20% of the injured in Iraq have suffered severe brain injuries, and as many as 70% had the potential for resulting in brain injury.' - - link.
Iraq: the missing billions
A 'financial black hole': 'A staggering US$4 billion in oil revenues and other Iraqi funds earmarked for the reconstruction of the country has disappeared into opaque bank accounts administered by the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA), the US-controlled body that rules Iraq. By the end of the year, if nothing changes in the way this cash is accounted for, that figure will double.'
Remembering those lost for Iraqi oil
'The names today raise anger on two levels, because they died so young, and for so useless a reason.'

American soldier killed, two wounded in Iraq
Thu October 23, 2003 12:25 PM - One U.S. soldier was killed and two wounded on Thursday when their convoy was hit by an explosion near Baquba, north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.
U.S. Central Command said the soldiers from the 4th Infantry Division had been hit by an improvised explosive device in the latest in a series of attacks on U.S. occupying forces.
Rummy's on hot seat
Glum memo on war steams White House
Donald Rumsfeld angered the White House yesterday with a leaked memo questioning whether the U.S. was winning the war on terror.
"This has put Rummy in a bad spot," one misadministration source leaked.
"Before this he had personality and policy problems," the source said. "Now he has a credibility problem because he's acknowledged that they've all been putting on a happy face about Iraq."
"The {p}resident isn't happy," but he won't fire Rumsfeld, a Bush official said.

Senate passes bill to stop junk e-mail
Finally, they all do something right.
The Senate passed - by 97-0 - a wide-ranging bill Wednesday to stamp out spam.
The bill makes some spamming a crime with up to five-year jail terms and bans companies from sending repeat e-mails to people who do not want to be contacted. It also calls for creation of a national "do-not-e-mail" list similar to the "do-not-call" registry that is already stopping unwanted telemarketers.
The bill stops short of mandating the registry, instead directing the FTC to develop a registry system within six months and to document technical hurdles.

Ruh roh!
'A strong geomagnetic storm was expected to hit Earth on Friday with the potential to affect electrical grids and satellite communications.
'One of the largest sunspot clusters in years developed over the past three days and produced a coronal mass ejection, similar to a solar flare, at 3 a.m. EDT Wednesday, forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
'The storm could make the aurora visible as far south as Oregon and Illinois.'
That'll be cool, but I bet it'll take out my computer.

Nailing down Bush's legacy
A helpless pawn controlled by neoconservatives, or a powermad liar?
'Was Bush deceived by his neocon advisers into this Middle Eastern debacle, or was Bush lying to the public for more selfish, personal motives? If he was deceived, history will judge Bush as a puppet of radical neo-imperialists. However, if Bush intentionally lied to support his call to arms, he has committed an impeachable offense.
'Either way, Bush's legacy is set.' - - from a Star-Telegram opinion.

Bush heckled by Australian Parliament
CANBERRA, Australia - Heckled inside and outside Australia's Parliament, war deserter Chimpy McFlightsuit offered his typical non-answer to those who said the war with Iraq wasn't worth fighting.
"Who can possibly think that the world would be better off with Saddam Hussein still in power?" the indolent fraud, AWOL chickensh*t and partying fratboy Bush asked.
Nice lamoid justification, numnuts. I guess the more than 300 soldiers who have died, the 4000 or so who were wounded, their families, and the uncounted civilian dead would, for starters.
Oh, and maybe some American taxpayers.... :
US-run Iraqi authority fails to account for billions
LONDON (AP) - The U.S.-run body governing Iraq has failed to account for billions of dollars allocated for rebuilding the country, a prominent British aid group charged Thursday.
The funds include $1 billion from the former United Nations Oil for Food program, $2.5 billion in assets seized from Saddam Hussein's former regime an $1.5 billion in oil revenues, the group said.
"This is Iraqi money," said Roger Riddell, Christian Aid's international director. "The people of Iraq must know where it is going and it should be used for the benefit of all the country's people, particularly the poorest."
Some American lawmakers have charged that money meant for Iraqi rebuilding has been squandered by paying inflated prices to Halliburton, Dick 'Chicanery' Cheney's "former" company that buys oil for Iraq from neighboring countries.

Altering the rules when convenient
'The right wing operates its own code -- a kind of moral Talibanism where the punishment for sin is death (as in the death penalty) or if the crime is noncriminal, ridicule, ouster or impeachment. The right applies the code to politicians, ordinary citizens and celebrities with equal dispassion. And no one gets away unjudged -- except, of course, for the right-wingers themselves.' - - from Joy-Ann Reid's editorial in the Miami Herald.
Open letter to America: It's time to take back our country
'Before a single bomb was ever dropped, some of us, formerly called the "anti-American and unpatriotic," have questioned or opposed this war. Now, each day, as the dust settles and the truth slowly surfaces, more and more people come to the inevitable conclusion of what a debacle this whole war was.
'39,000 bombs later, no weapons of mass destruction uncovered, no dangerous dictators captured, no connection to Sept 11. What have we gained but relentless media coverage of a fallen statue and some stolen oil fields -- the spoils of this misadventure. Not to mention lucrative corporate payoffs and an enormous price tag of over 80 Billion dollars.' - - by John & Elaine Mellencamp.
Stolen oil fields that aren't producing anything but acts of sabotage and oil fires.

Supporting our troops
Then:
'In The Faith of George W. Bush, a sympathetic account of this religious journey, Stephen Mansfield writes "Aides found him face down on the floor in prayer in the Oval Office. It became known that he refused to eat sweets while American troops were in Iraq, a partial fast seldom reported of an American president."'
And now:
'Bush was in an expansive mood on the flight from Indonesia to Australia, wearing an Air Force One flight jacket, snacking noisily on a butterscotch sweets.'
