"inadvertent slip"
From the Washingtoon comPost: Senate Republican leader/white supremacist Trent 'Hairball' Lott (R-Chlorox), under pressure from fellow Republicans, yesterday launched a new effort to quell a growing controversy over comments that implied support for past segregationist policies in the South, calling his words "terrible" and "insensitive" and asserting, "I don't accept those policies of the past at all."
Last night he piously told Larry King "We need to come together; we need to be uniters, not dividers" (bwwwwaaaa!) and rejected calls from Democrats and civil rights leaders that he step down as majority leader.
In the secret fort in the WH, pReznit Stoopid was busy blowing up his Lincoln Logs and could not be reached for comment.

What's in your wallet?
A "kill vehicle" designed to destroy incoming warheads failed to separate from its booster today in a test over the Pacific, setting back a multibillion-dollar system under development to shield against ballistic missiles from countries such as Iraq, Iran and North Korea.
Developing a missile defense is the Pentagon's single most expensive program, likely to cost hundreds of billions of dollars over coming decades, including sea-, air- and space-based components. - link.

NYC to host puke convention?
New York City is close to winning the the 2004 Repuglican National Convention, the Daily News is reporting, despite White House concerns that Mayor Bloomberg is not enough of a team player.
Several GOP sources said that while Bunnypants has not made up his mind, both Bush and chief political strategist Karl Rove are leaning toward New York's bid.
Rove recently told political allies that Bloomberg was an impediment to the city's winning its first Republican convention. He has a reputation around the White House for being "not as cooperative as he should be," one source alleged.
Evidently, at a secret meeting between Rove and Bloomberg last week, Turdblossom 'wanted to be reassured the convention will be a Bush show, not a Bloomberg show.' Plus, Mike's still in the doghouse for not making it "convenient for the President to come and pay his respects" during Emperor Snippy's visit to the city for the first anniversary of the terror attacks.

Gah. We're in for a heavy ice storm today thru tomorrow morning, so some quickies before we lose power:
In other words, quit bugging me
White House spokes-tool Ari 'the Liar' Fleischer said Trent Lott "has apologized for his statement, and the president understands that that is the final word from Senator Lott."
Duh
Fleischer also said the Churchillian Smirky McGolfcart thinks Americans should take pride in the "tremendous strides and changes and improvements" that have been made in race relations since 1948. "We were a nation that needed to change," he said.
Where Tom Daschle's balls went
Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California said Lott "can apologize all he wants. It doesn't remove the sentiment that escaped his mouth that day." - link.
God loves you. Everyone else thinks you're an asshole.
"Bush ran on this platform of moral purity. Then he turns around as President and chooses liars for high government positions, and no one says a peep." - Richard Cohen.

The Growing Fire Around Trent Lott
...and around Tom 'Isadora' Daschle.
Byron York of the National Review writes: There are new indications on Capitol Hill that the controversy over Sen. Trent Lott's remarks at the birthday ceremony for Sen. Strom Thurmond might soon swell into a major issue touching leading politicians of both parties.
Speaking at a news conference Tuesday morning, members of the Congressional Black Caucus promised to take far-reaching action over the Lott matter. "The fact is that this is a man who is four heartbeats from the presidency, and we cannot have in 2002 those kinds of views being expressed by someone who...is setting policy," said Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings, the incoming chairman of the CBC.
While most of those who spoke at the news conference directed their fire at Lott, Rep. Maxine Waters expanded the issue beyond Lott's words to the reaction of Sen. Tom Daschle and other Democratic leaders.
"I think that Mr. Daschle moved too quickly to explain Mr. Lott," Waters said today. "I consider that this is a Democratic party issue, and to the degree that the Democratic party understands that it must relate to the concerns of African Americans, they will pause and take into consideration what message this and other kinds of statements like this are sending into the African American community. It is not enough to simply defend or to explain these kinds of statements and then at election time talk about why black Americans should turn out in large numbers. So we've got some work to do."
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, Democrat of Texas, expanded the list of those affected by the controversy even further. "Those who don't look like me should be raising their voices," she said. "We want our fellow colleagues, and as well leaders from around the nation, including my good friend President Bush, including the leaders of the religious community and others, to address the questions of marginalizing a very sizable population in this nation. This sends us into a very wrong direction as we begin the 108th Congress."

Just kidding. The man flew actual combat missions, unlike his chickensh!t AWOL son. Kudos, Mr Bush.

Maybe I should just go back to bed
"By firing O'Neill and Lindsey, the president has finally managed to create the first two new jobs in his two-year administration." - email on Crossfire's fire back segment.
Trent Lott "prefers to be regarded as a sleazy hustler, and who can blame him? That's by far the more attractive side of his character." - Joe Conason.
"Today, another Republican judge has decided that, once in office, Bush and Cheney can operate in complete secrecy with no oversight by Congress." - Henry Waxman, on Dick 'Chicanery' Cheney's Energy Task Force.
"Lott's comment, according to the Washington Post, was met by 'an audible gasp and general silence.' But perhaps even more surprising is how that stunned silence extended all the way to the Democratic Party." - Salon's Anthony York. Puh - why should that be a surprise? The November election didn't change a thing: the Dems are still chickenshit pussies.
"He thought it was a social occasion," Boob Novak said of Trent 'two squirrels had to die so I could have this hair' Lott on Meet the Press. "He's thinking what comes to his mind. He's saying - if you listen to the whole speech, he's making extravagant statements about Strom Thurmond, as he should on his 100th birthday." Novak blamed the press of picking "up something that's said at a birthday party and turn it into a case of whether he should be impeached."
Here's Boob again, on last night's Crossfire: "This was just the most disgraceful thing by the news media. But it was really - it was just a lot of fun and he got carried away."
The hypocrisy of the repuke party is unbelievable. They're still trashing the Dems for the Paul Wellstone memorial service, but Lott's comments are just pooh-poohed as being 'extravagant' and 'good-natured hyperbole.' Oh, and if anyone has any pics of pink tutus, please send them in.

Suit Against Cheney Task Force Dismissed
The fix is in.
A federal judge today dismissed a lawsuit filed by the investigative arm of Congress against Dick 'Chicanery' Cheney's energy task force.
U.S. District Judge John Bates said the case filed by Comptroller General David Walker against the vice president is an unprecedented act that raises serious separation-of-powers issues between the executive and legislative branches of government.
"No court has ever before granted what the comptroller general seeks," wrote Bates, an appointee of pResident Bush. - link.

Hey, it's Clinton's recession! It's because of 9/11! We're going to war against Iraq!
Meanwhile, the White House and the RNC are sending out a million Christmas cards to their closest donors. I wish I could remember which blogster posted a pic and called the card "soulless". WTF got a few messages asking where the hey we were this weekend. Ummmm, sorry. I kept meaning to post, but we kind of got caught up in the holiday spirit thing. Must've been all that snow. We finished shovelling out, went shopping for pointsettias, filled the bird feeders, watched football, made a wreath out of grapevines, picked up our Christmas tree, washed windows, baked bread, built a fire, and watched "White Christmas." It's good to be back at work where I have an excuse to sit on my ass at the computer all day.
The new people across the street put up their outdoor Christmas lights this weekend, their little spawn shrieking at a pitch so high they set off every dog in the neighborhood. I figured this year I'd decorate my deer skull, stick a big red bulb in the nose-hole, and mount it on the front door. Heh heh heh.
I should never, ever open BuzzFlash first thing in the morning - it gets me too pissed off.
Quickies
Daddy's Little Dumbass will nominate CSX Corp. Chairman John W. Snow of Virginia to replace Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and lead an economic team retooled for the resident's re-election drive, White House officials said this morning. Snow was deputy undersecretary at the Transportation Department under President Ford. - link here.
"It's time we recognized that not only does our emperor have no clothes - he's steadily stealing ours." - Jill Nelson, in USA Today.
"The Republicans' recent revival of their own dinosaurs betrays something far more troubling: a hostility to dissent and an eagerness to exercise power that are dismayingly redolent of the heavies they seek to resurrect." - David Greenberg, in the Washington Post.
"On Thursday incoming Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott seemed to explicitly endorse the pro-segregation, anti-civil rights platform which Strom Thurmond ran for president on in 1948. He even bemoaned all the 'problems' the country might have avoided if it had taken the segregation route." - Josh Marshall, in Talking Points Memo.

December 6, 2002
I'm shovelling out from 6 inches of snow today. There I was, huffing and puffing, not even a third of the way down the driveway, when the BF phoned from his business trip and said "the snow's not so light anymore, is it?!" I could've cheerfully gone thru the phone line and strangled him. But first, the nooze:
Go, and never darken my towels again!
Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and economic adviser Larry Lindsey were booted from pReznit Privilege's economic team amid 'growing concerns' of well, not things like the unemployment rate rising to 6 percent on Friday, the highest in nearly nine years, but that the lagging economy could hamper Bunnypants' re-election prospects.
Here's Ari 'the Liar' Fleischer's comment: "They have both served the president ably and well in leading the nation from a period of recession into a period of growth." Did I miss something??
It'll be interesting to see which serial liars/criminals from the Reagan/Poppy years will get the jobs. - link.
And so it begins
9/11 Relatives Accuse G.O.P. of Blocking Panel Member -
Relatives of the Sept. 11 victims said today that their choice as a Republican appointee to the commission investigating the terrorist attacks, Warren Rudman, was being blocked by Republican leaders and the White House.
Stephen Push, a spokesman for the families, said they believed that Mr. Rudman was the only Republican both highly qualified to participate in the investigation and sufficiently independent of his party's leadership to ensure a thorough and impartial inquiry.
"Warren Rudman is the only Republican candidate for this position that all the families trust," he said. - link.
So forget it right now
The Bush misadministration says it has solid evidence that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction, but feels no obligation to prove its allegations before leading an attack on Baghdad. - link. F*cking crap.
