This doesn’t have to be this way. The Democrats won last year’s election fair and square, and now they control the calendar for bringing up bills in Congress. They need to pass each of these spending bills individually, on time, and in a fiscally responsible way.
The budget I’ve sent to Congress fully funds America’s priorities. It increases discretionary spending by 6.9 percent. My Cabinet Secretaries assure me that this is adequate to meet the needs of our nation.
Unfortunately, Democratic leaders in Congress want to spend far more. Their budget calls for nearly $22 billion more in discretionary spending next year alone. These leaders have tried to downplay that figure. Yesterday one called this increase — and I quote — “a very small difference” from what I proposed. Only in Washington can $22 billion be called a very small difference. And that difference will keep getting bigger. Over the next five years it will total nearly $205 billion in additional discretionary spending. That $205 billion averages out to about $112 million per day, $4.7 million per hour, $78,000 per minute.

Ummm OK, Mr Math Wizard, what about the 2.5 BILLION dollars per week of OUR money that you are spending in a failed attempt to steal oil from brown-skinned people? Do the math on that one, and STFU!

The Attorney General has earned disastrous reviews for his inconsistent testimony, poor judgment and for appearing to place loyalty to the White House above service to the public. By June it was hard to find a Republican willing to defend him. Now Gonzales' dissembling testimony about a controversial domestic-spying program has raised suspicions about what he is hiding and fueled new calls for him to go...

Here are four reasons why Bush won't do it:

1. Gonzales is all that stands between the White House and special prosecutors. As dicey as things are for Bush right now, his advisers know that they could get much worse. Like the outing of the most corrupt administration in history.

2. A post-Gonzales DOJ would be in the hands of a nonpartisan, tough prosecutor, not a political dongchomper like Bush's BFF Li'l Chili-Bean.

3. If Gonzales goes, the White House fears that other losses will follow. Gonzales remains the last line of defense protecting Rove, Cheney, and other top White House officials. The very same ones who promised to bring honor and integrity back to the White House.

4. Nobody at the White House wants the legal bills and headaches that come with being a target of investigations.

Feh. Bills would be the least of their problems. More here.

Gonzo's latest defense: "I was confused"
"The top law-enforcement official in the land is a total blazing nincompoop" actually isn't much of a defense, Abuto...

Alberto Gonzales conceded on Wednesday that he used confusing language in describing national security efforts in recent Senate testimony.

"I am deeply concerned with suggestions that my testimony was misleading, and am determined to address any such impression," Gonzales wrote in a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Chairman Pat Leahy was not swayed.

"The attorney general's legalistic explanation of his misleading testimony under oath last week is not what one should expect from the top law enforcement officer of the United States," he said in a statement after receiving Gonzales' letter. "Fucking dillweed."

Dithering repug Arlen Specter, too, said Gonzales misled the committee. But Specter said the attorney general's testimony did not amount to perjury.

"I don't think he did try to provide frank answers. It was more than confusion, it was misleading," Specter drooled. "Alberto is not a perjurer, though. He's a confused, lying perjurer but he is not a porn star."

The respected British reporter shot back, "I didn’t know you cared."

US attorney John Brownlee has testified he received a call from Michael Elston, then chief of staff to the deputy attorney general, the night before a guilty plea was to be secured from the manufacturer of OxyContin. Elston, a Justice aide involved in the removal of nine US attorneys, called Brownlee at the request of an OxyContin executive urging him to slow down the prosecution. Car bombs kill scores in Baghdad: At least 67 people have been killed and almost 100 have been wounded in two separate bombings in Baghdad, Iraqi police have said. In one attack, a fuel tanker packed with explosives exploded near a petrol station in the mainly Sunni suburb of Mansour, killing 50. Earlier, at least 17 people were killed and 32 injured in a blast in the mainly Shia shopping district of Karrada.

The main Sunni Arab political bloc quit the Iraqi cabinet on Wednesday, plunging the government into crisis on a day when suicide bombers killed more than 73 people with massive strikes in the capital.

The number of Iraqi civilians killed rose by more than a third in July despite a five-month-old surge in US troop levels, 33 percent more than in the previous month.

American military deaths for July rose to 76 on Wednesday with the report of three U.S. soldiers killed by a powerful roadside bomb.

And another misadministartion fuck-up: The US government cannot account for 190,000 weapons issued to Iraqi security forces in 2004 and 2005, according to an investigation carried out by the Government Accountability Office.
