George W Bush faced renewed pressure over the September 11 attacks last night when it emerged that a secret CIA briefing a month before the attack had focused mainly on the threat to targets in America itself - and not on the risk to United States interests abroad as the White House had claimed.
The document, which the 'president' ordered as part of his daily intelligence briefing, stressed that Osama bin Laden was seeking ways to "bring the fight to America", according to reports in Washington yesterday.
At the same time it emerged that the FBI had known for far longer than previously acknowledged that the al-Qa'eda network was training pilots in America and had been contemplating an airborne suicide attack.
The revelations will fuel the first serious political firestorm to engulf the Toxic Trifectan since September 11, and threatens to dog him throughout his visit to Europe and Russia this week.
