Happy Halloween!

Things are goin' great!
"The United States is groping to counter the hostility stirred by its occupation."

American troops clashed with rioters carrying Saddam's picture Friday in a Baghdad suburb, and a heavy smoke billowed from the mayor's office in a city west of the capital following a strong explosion.

In Fallujah, a strong explosion on Friday shook the center of the city, and thick black smoke billowed from the mayor's office, witnesses said. The blast was heard about 1:35 p.m., and Iraqi police blocked off the roads leading there. More details were not immediately available.

A melee at Abu Ghraib, some 10 miles west of Baghdad, apparently broke out when coalition forces tried to open up a road that had been partly blocked by market stalls.

A roadside bomb exploded near a U.S. foot patrol on the outskirts of the northern city of Mosul and unidentified gunmen sprayed the city hall with automatic fire, officers said Friday. Nobody was injured in the attacks. - - link

Hundreds of families who lost their homes to post-war rent hikes are bracing for the freezing winter season, haunted by the fear of another expulsion from their dilapidated shacks along Baghdad's notoriously violent airport road.

Meanwhile, the US is 'glumly accepting' the withdrawal of UN and aid workers from Iraq, despite personal appeals to stay from US Secretary of State Colin Powell.
