Quick! Call 9/11!

The rightwing media is comparing the passage of the health care legislation to historical events including the Black Plague, the attack on Pearl Harbor, Bloody Sunday, the passage of the Stamp Act, the federal government's refusal to bail out New York City in the 1970's, the Jonestown massacre, the repeal of slavery, the Columbine shootings, the Battle of Hastings, the breakup of the Beatles, Custer’s last stand, the introduction of New Coke, the death of Ronald Reagan, the battle of Thermopylae, The Day The Music Died and the entire eight years of the Bush Misadministration.

I have to say that I am not particularly thrilled about the HCR legislation and have doubts whether it is going to be a framework for bringing the U.S. into at least the ballpark of every other developed country, but regardless of my personal misgivings I am truly happy it passed if only because of the joy it has brought me to see GOP and Teapartier heads explode. I have not felt this good since I smacked a bully in the third grade and he started crying for his mama. Of course, I got smacked when my folks found out about it, but that was a different time.

I too have some real concerns about this bill (the slow phase-in's, continued private insurance companies, etc), but I think it -- much like (caution: RATIONAL analogy coming up, unlike the preceding GOP ones!) Medicare passage back in '65 (or whatever the exact date was) -- it represents a paradigm shift in the CORRECT direction. A momentum shift towards something positive.

This insanity/psuedo-outrage issuing forth from the Reich-wingers is virtual proof that it's something GOOD! When they have to contort themselves into knots trying to equate horrible massacres to a piece of humanistic legislation that will SAVE lives and make MILLIONS of peoples' quality-of-life much better, you just KNOW they're desperation is showing. If you read the conservatives hysterical historical reaction to Social Security Insurance back in the 1930's, you'll see the exact same florid rhetoric. Of course when it comes to ACTUAL US massacres - - Sand Hill, No Gun Ri, My Lai, etc, or US allies' massacres (think: Central/South America in the 1980's for instance, or Iraq's use of chemical weapons back in the early 80's when he was Reagan's 'buddy', etc) -- then the conservatives can be ALWAYS counted on to downplay/pooh-pooh & excuse it, or even belittle the victims (ie; Jeanne Kirpatrick's criticizing the 4 nuns who had been raped/murdered in Honduras by government soldiers). They are unredeemable MORAL hypocrites who's arguments need to be entirely discounted by ethical people. Yes, they should have legal freedom of speech - - just like a street person ranting at passer-bys in the park - - but it needs to become common knowledge that their moral arguments are 98% hypocritical diversions and nothing more.
