The Bush 9/11 spin machine: What did they lie about, and when did they lie about it?
(by Michelle Goldberg) "Now that it's been revealed that the CIA warned President Bush last August about an Osama bin Laden hijacking plot, the world is asking exactly what Bush knew and when he knew about it. It's also worth looking at what White House officials lied about and when they lied about it -- or at least when and how they wildly spun the truth over the last eight months.
{snip} "There have been at least two previous attempts by terrorists to use planes as bombs: One was in 1994, when a hijacked Air France flight was ambushed in Marseilles by a French anti-terrorism squad, and one was even earlier, in 1986, when Americans thwarted a similar plan to blow up a plane over Tel Aviv. And there have been other terrorist plots to use planes as weapons that were never carried out. The 1993 World Trade Center bomber Ramzi Yousef, for instance, had a grand plan to hijack 11 American airplanes and blow them up over the Pacific Ocean.
"Just last July, American and international security officials were on high alert for the G8 meeting in Genoa, following reports that al-Qaida was plotting a strike against President Bush. "Surface-to-air missiles, fighter jets and naval ships form part of the security operation," CNN reported, while the British Guardian said the measures were designed to repel "an aerial-led attack," which intelligence had warned about."
The 9/11 coverup: First the White House ignored warnings about al-Qaida. Then it tried to stop Congress from getting the truth. Now we know why.
Joe Conason kicks ass: "Incompetence, rather than conspiracy, remains the most plausible explanation for the Bush administration's failure to prevent the terrorist atrocities of Sept. 11, 2001. But "conspiracy" is beginning to look like a plausible description of the administration's effort to conceal its tragic errors.
"For the first time in eight months, angry citizens are asking why they have suddenly learned what George W. Bush knew all along: That weeks before the event, the CIA had warned the president and other top officials of an active plot by Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida operatives to seize civilian aircraft. That during the same period, FBI special agents in Phoenix and Minnesota had warned their own agency of activity by suspected al-Qaida operatives at U.S. flight schools. That somehow nobody at the FBI, the CIA, the National Security Council or any other government intelligence agency managed to connect those dots until after the disaster.
"Evidently Bush and his associates wanted to ensure that nobody else connected the dots, because they point directly to the White House. So determined were they to prevent the emergence of such embarrassing facts that when the Democrats took control of the Senate, Vice President Dick Cheney tried to intimidate Majority Leader Tom Daschle from undertaking a serious investigation of the Sept. 11 catastrophe. Both Newsweek and the Washington Post reported last January that Cheney called Daschle to warn against the investigation." - - Lots more at link above
